Ingredients
Kuftips cough syrup composition: what is in each 5 ml
The carton lists six herbal ingredients per 5 ml in a sugar syrup base, with caramel colour and three preservatives.[1] Kuftips is sold as an Ayurvedic proprietary medicine: under Section 3(h) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, that is a formulation made only from ingredients described in the Ayurvedic books listed in the Act, where the formulation itself is not one of the classical formulations in those books.[2]

Dosage
How to take Kuftips syrup
| Age | Dose (label) | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Above 12 years and adults | 2 teaspoons (10 ml) | 3 times a day |
| 6 to 12 years | 1 teaspoon (5 ml) | 3 times a day |
| Up to 6 years | Half teaspoon (2.5 ml) | 3 times a day, see the warning below |
Scroll the table sideways if it is cut off.
The carton suggests mixing the dose with half a cup of lukewarm water, or taking it as your physician directs. It also says: if cough persists, consult your doctor.[1] Use a measuring cup rather than a kitchen spoon, since kitchen spoons vary in size.
Young children. On 3 October 2025 the Union Health Ministry advised that cough and cold medicines should not be prescribed or dispensed to children under 2 years, and are generally not recommended under 5 years.[3] Do not give Kuftips to a child under 2. For a child under 5, use it only if a doctor advises it.
In September 2026 the Drugs Consultative Committee also recommended a red warning on cough syrup labels against use below 4 years. That is a recommendation, not yet a notified rule.[4]
Safety
Who should ask a doctor before taking Kuftips
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Licorice (Yashtimadhu) is advised against in pregnancy.[7] Safety evidence for Vasaka in pregnancy is limited.[9]
- High blood pressure, heart disease or low potassium. Large or long-term amounts of licorice can raise blood pressure and lower potassium.[7],[8]
- If you take blood pressure tablets, diuretics (water tablets), digoxin, corticosteroids or warfarin. Licorice can interact with each of these.[7]
- Diabetes or a low-sugar diet. Each 5 ml has 3 g of sugar, so the adult dose of 10 ml three times a day adds about 18 g of sugar a day.[1]
- Allergy to any listed herb, to parabens or to sodium benzoate.
Do not take more than the label dose. Keep the bottle out of reach of children and store it in a cool, dry place.
